As Thom Browne prepares to launch his new sub-brand, a cheaper equivalent of the highly coveted brand, this years New York Fashion Week collection for Spring/Summer 2010 took place in Browne’s Hudson Street store, rather than at a lavish off street location.. another sign that the designer is more than aware of the tough financial times surrounding him. The collection itself however was not toned down in anyway, the mix of the designers signature preppy style with a modern sportswear influence makes it stand out.

With a show structured around national anthems and emblems, and a soundtrack that had the underlying buzz of a stadium crowd, Yohji Yamamoto embraced the universal spirit of sport with his new collection for Adidas. Appropriately, the standout men’s items were the sportiest: the shoes, the nylon parkas, the tank tops. As usual, there were pieces that served as a reminder of Yohji’s unimpeachable position in the world of the fashion avant-garde—oversize plaid shirts that extended into points at the front, or black culottes—but the net tubes that wrapped the models at one point just looked silly. There was some method to the madness, however. A net dropped from the ceiling at the finale, and Zidane—yes, that Zidane—joined Yohji for a kickabout. Maybe it was only testament to a promotional deal with Adidas that the soccer legend had to honor, but still, it was a punchy finale that sent the crowd away happy.
